Obama - born to be USA President

Is it not prophetic that on the 4th April 1968, the great civil Rights Leader, the Right Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, after making his historic speech, 'I have a dream' was assassinated in Memphis Tennessee USA, and on the 4th November 2008, some forty years later, Senator Barack Obama, an African American, was overwhelmingly elected as President of the United States of America. Obama is fulfilling the prophetic dream of Dr Martin Luther King. Dr Martin Luther King built a very sound foundation for Senator Barack Obama, with his prophetic dream of mutual respect, non-violence, meritocracy, love and unity among races where Jews and Gentiles can live in absolute harmony. Obama won by a big margin - Obama 349 and McCain 162 electoral college votes.

It is clear that Obama was driven by inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King in believing that the Presidency was a huge challenge, but was achievable. He never once used the bitter pill of slavery or the high level of racial turbulence in the USA in the 1960s as an excuse to support his bid for the Presidency.

Barack Obama, a Law Professor, was raised from very humble beginnings. His father is a Mathematics Professor from Kenya and his mother from Hawaii, of European stock. His parents separated when he was two years old and he was brought up by his loving grandmother. Everyone who knows Barack Obama says his calm, eloquent and witty disposition is a product of the environment in which he was brought up. So, the enabling environment played a pivotal role in what he eventually became.

Coupled with the Martin Luther King's philosophy, Obama's own disposition and belief have propelled him to be a Senator in the Illinois State Senate in 1988. With the profound belief that there was nothing preventing him becoming the President of the United States of America, he entered the Presidential race becoming the nominee for the Democrats.

His wife, Michelle Obama, is also a lawyer by profession, with outstanding qualities for becoming the First Lady of America. She is a tower of strength to her husband and their two daughters. She has played a very supportive role in the months of tough campaigning.

In all of this though, the entire world must take their hats off to the great American people for their overwhelming support in electing Senator Obama to the Office of President and Commander in Chief of the American Armed forces. They were able to put all differences aside and elect him on merit, ability and his visionary approach to resolving the burning issues of our time, such as the effects of climate change, the unprecedented collapse of the American banks and financial markets, inequity in health care and education.

SVG Green Party is deeply refreshed by the rising star of President elect Barack Obama. We sincerely congratulate all those who have made his journey to victory a historical resounding success. An SVG Green Party Government will erect a statue in Kingstown in honour of this great American President. Barack Obama's achievement ranks alongside that of Nelson Mandela.
