SVG GREEN PARTY CONDEMNS VICIOUS ATTACK ON ELDERLY COUPLE IN HARMONY HALL, PROSPECT, ON SUNDAY 17TH DECEMBER 2006
An elderly couple in their late seventies who had returned from England to reside in their country which they love so much, were viciously attacked at about 6.15 am whilst having breakfast in their preparation to go to church. Two persons with hoods over their head and face, one carrying a gun and the other carrying a cutlass, knocked the elderly lady to the floor and demanded money. The husband was accompanied to the bedroom by one of the robbers to get money. In the bedroom the husband pulled out a cutlass from under the bed. One robber ran away and the husband chopped the other robber who was on top of the wife in the kitchen.
Mr Ivan O'Neal, the leader of the Green Party, was called to the scene by the elderly couple as protection until the police arrived.
The SVG Green Party strongly condemns this vicious and barbaric attack on the elderly couple. We are aware that the weak leadership by the ULP regime is not capable of tackling the high violent crime rate and the deteriorating socio-economic problems in our country, that drive people through desperation to commit more violent crimes.
People are living in fear of violent crime in SVG. The SVG Green Party see that it is only a change over to very strong leadership in the affairs of the country with the vision to draw a strategic plan to combat serious crime as the only solution. The situation needs urgent attention if we are to stop crime escalating out of control. In the likely event that the violent crime situation gets out of control an early General Election will have to be called.
In the interim, SVG Green Party strongly recommends that all householders take steps to better secure their properties, and in the long-term, to ensure that this country gets strong leadership that is capable of being tough on crime and the socio-economic causes of crime.
